Performance
Please note that this mage spec is optimized for "[Arcane Blast] Only" and offers very high sustained DPS. Important: Cataclysm brought significant changes. First thing you will notice that mana cost of Arcane Blast increases drasticaly with each new level (80-85) and your mana pool will be drained even faster. In order to solve this issue when leveling you must:
You will have to eat [Conjured Mana Cake] in dungeons at every oportunity.
Introduction
Mage is pure DPS class and must convert mana to damage. If mage ends fight with
100% mana bar then mage is not using his full capacity. A lot of mages with high
gear score play it wrong in Cataclysm by using old "4 x
[Arcane Blast] + [Arcane Missiles]"
rotation. Problem is that players are not realizing that high level (gear score)
mages can use just Arcane Blast in long fights as long as their Haste is limited
to certain amount. Slow Arcane Blasts (4 stack) can do much more damage than faster
4xAB+AM rotation. Assumption that Haste is always better than Crit is wrong. Haste
is good in very short fights but gives you completely nothing in long mana burn
fights. Haste just depletes your mana faster while Crit offers more DPS per mana.
Gems
In order of DPS gain:
If you have reached 17% Hit Chance on Spells then use "Timeless Demonseye" for Blue Socket instead of "Veiled Demonseye" or hit points will be wasted. You can try to reforge your armor and reduce "Hit Rating" in order to avoid "Timeless Demonseye" gem option. Note: Match socket color to use bonus!
Buffs
[Mage Armor]
Resistance to all magic schools increased by 44 and regenerating 3% of maximum mana
every 5 sec. Duration of all harmful Magic effects reduced by 35%. Note: +10 intellect
on armour will not only increase your mana bar by 150 points but adds extra 5.4
mana regeneration per second (thanks to Mage Armour + Mage Armour Glyph).
[Flask of the Draconic Mind]
Increases Intellect by 300 for 1 hour. Counts as both a Battle and Guardian elixir.
This effect persists through death.
[Runescroll of Fortitude II]
Increases Stamina by 468 for all party and raid members for 1 hour.
[Seafood Magnifique
Feast]
Set out a seafood feast to feed your entire raid or party! Restores 96000 health
and 96000 mana over 30 sec. If you spend at least 10 seconds eating you will become
well fed and gain 90 Stamina and 90 in another useful stat for 1 hour.
[Severed Sagefish
Head]
Restores 96000 health and 96000 mana over 30 sec. Must remain seated while eating.
If you spend at least 10 seconds eating you will become well fed and gain 90 Intellect
and 90 Stamina for 1 hour.
[Volcanic Potiond]
Increases Intellect by 1200 for 25 sec. (1 Min Cooldown)
Note: Make sure that you have plenty of these items in your bag before entering
raid instance. Apply buffs and scrolls after everybody buffs so items won't be wasted.
If you have a difficult fight with wipes then be kind and share some items with
your raid members because it will improve success of the team - remind them to acquire
this stuff from Action House next time.
Mages should always reforge armour's Spirit and Haste to Hit (up to 17% cap) or
Mastery. Spirit is useless for Mage now and haste is only good in very short fights
but will leave you with empty mana bar too soon in long fights against Skull Elites.
Up to 2 min fights: Haste Rating gives DPS advantage over Critical Rating in short fights or longer fights where you can't cast because you need to move frequently. Up to 5 min fights (recommended): Critical Rating is better than Haste Rating for long fights, because slower casts means better mana conservation - you can stay longer at the 50-100% mana range and benefit from Mastery: Mana Adept (+15% DPS). Stack stats in this order: Hit, Intellect, Mastery, Haste / Critical Note: in very short fights (less than 30 sec): Your DPS will be lower than usual since low level targets will be killed before you can reach 4 stacks of Arcane Blast buff (+63% DPS) or before you will finish casting. You can switch to healthier target in the middle of the fight because others will finish previous one in the second anyway. But keep in mind that primary target usually will have various debuffs from raid members (like increase of damage taken by 6%) which can increase your DPS significantly. Set Focus on tank so it will be easier to select primary target. Note: If you are Level 85 Mage with 8K GearScore then use Ironforge dummies to check balance between Haste and Critical Rating. If you spam Arcane Blasts only (+Mage Armour +Mage Armour Glyph) then you should last about ~50 sec till mana is depleted. If you last less than 50 seconds then consider replacing some Haste with other stat: Intelect, Mastery or Critical Strike
Profession
[Alchemy]
Allows an alchemist to brew extraordinary potions. This profession will save you
tons of money on flasks, potions and gives you:

You receive an increased effect and duration when you drink any elixir or flask
you are able to make.
Allows collecting of herbs from plants found around the world. This profession will
be used to provide most of materials to Alchemy. Two most useful zones: "Tol Barad",
"Twilight Highlands" and "Uldum"
[Lifeblood]
Uses your skill in Herbalism to absorb energy and nutrients from the earth, instantly
healing minor wounds and granting 480 haste rating
for 20 sec. Can be used while stealthed or invisible.

[Glyph of Arcane Blast]
Major
Increases the damage from your Arcane Blast buff by 3%.
[Glyph of Cone of Cold]
Increases the damage of your Cone of Cold spell by 25%. Useful in Solo PvE.
[Glyph of Mage Armor]
Your Mage Armor regenerates 20% more mana.
[Glyph of Evocation]
Minor
Your Evocation ability also causes you to regain 40% of your health over its duration.
[Glyph of Slow]
Increase the range of your Slow spell by 5 yards.
[Glyph of Polymorph]
Allows to apply Slow with Arcane Blast (requires "Nether Vortex" talent) on targets more than 35 yards away.
Your Polymorph spell also removes all damage over time effects from the target.
[Glyph of Slow Fall]
Your Slow Fall spell no longer requires a reagent.
[Glyph of Arcane Brilliance]
Reduces the mana cost of your Arcane Brilliance spell by 50%.
[Glyph of Conjuring]
Reduces the mana cost of your Conjuring spells by 50%.

Permanently enchant a cloak to increase Intellect by 50.

[Powerful Enchanted Spellthread]
Permanently embroiders spellthread into pants, increasing Intellect by 95 and Stamina
by 80.
[Greater Inscription of Charged
Lodestone]
Permanently adds 50 Intellect and 25 haste rating to a shoulder slot item.
[Arcanum of Hyjal]
Requires Therazane - Exalted.
Permanently adds 60 Intellect and 35 critical strike rating to a head slot item.
[Enchant Boots - Lavawalker]
Requires Guardians of Hyjal - Revered.
Permanently enchant boots to increase movement speed slightly and mastery rating
by 35.
[Enchant Weapon - Power Torrent]
Cheaper Alternative: [Earthen Vitality] Note: This enchant will give you 8% movement speed increase. This is extremely usefull when running from enemy players (PvP), mobs (PvE) or out of damage pools.
Permanently enchant a weapon to sometimes increase Intellect by 500 for 12 sec when
dealing damage or healing with spells.

Permanently enchant a shield or held item to increase Intellect by 40.
Macros
[Arcane Blast] - Max DPS Map this macro to key [1]. Start all short fights with this. If fight is longer than 30 sec then: Opener: 1. Cast [Mage Ward] 2. Hold [ALT] key and press [1] 3 times to get Arcane Blast [3] stacks. 3. Use [Spellsteal] (optional) 4. Cast [Flame Orb]. 5. Hold [ALT] key and press [1] to get Arcane Blast [4] stack. 6. Press [Mirror Image] macro button. Fight: 7. Release [ALT] key and cast with [1] key - this will use all trinkets and buffs when you are at max DPS. 8. Use Evocate when mana is depleted at 35% (after ~1 min). 9. Continue with 2 x Arcane Blasts (key [1]) + 1 Arcane Barrage and keep mana bar at 95%. 10. ~30 sec seconds before Evocate ability is ready go to step 7 and start burn phase. Note 1: IMPORTANT! learn to press key [1] or [2] in advance when casting bar is still filling by casting of current spell. This will improve your DPS significantly. Note 2: Cast "Invisibility" during fight to remove THREAT from yourself. Note 3: If you see that this is a long fight (boss still have more than 40% health left) then switch to mana conservation sequence - reset "Arcane Blast" stacks with "Arcane Missiles" when available.

[Prismatic Cloak]
Reduces all damage taken by 6% and reduces the fade time of your Invisibility spell
by 3 sec. Very usefull talent for AB mages:
[Master of Elements]
a) Reduce Threat instantly by using [Invisibility] so you won't loose 4 stacks of [Arcane Blast]. b) It will improve your survivability and reduce strain on raid healers since you will get less damage.
Your spell criticals will refund 30% of their base mana cost. This talent allows
to extend high DPS (4 stack AB) casting time by 15% when your Critical Strike chance
is buffed to 50% in raids.
[Burning Soul] - good for Solo
Reduces the casting time lost from taking damaging attacks by 70%. More useful when
soloing or in dungeons when teamed with low level players, where your damage is
so great (more than 50% of total group damage) that mobs frequently attack you.
[Piercing Ice] - good for Raid
Increases the critical strike chance of your spells by 3%.
Activity
Try not to spend more than 2-3 seconds on moving between [Arcane Blast] casts or
you will lose DPS by losing 4 Stacks of Arcane Blast buff. 2-3 seconds is enough
to jump out of a dangerous pool (fire, frost ...) or de-curse a friendly player.
Remember that jump is better than run; because it requires only 1 quick key hit
while run requires you to hold down keyboard key for entire movement process. Try
to plan your movement ahead - before end of casting. Always think about how your
actions will affect team's performance as a whole. Remember: If team dies - you
die. Be ready to sacrifice some of your DPS if it could benefit your team member
and bring victory. But maintain some minimum DPS, because most pople will respect
you for your DPS first.
